Happy Halloween!

We planned for Elle to wear this mouse costume for Halloween...
But, she wasn't a huge fan of it (she rather look at it, than wear it), so she had a costume change early on! She decided to be a Bears cheerleader instead!

Ellison helped us answer the door and hand out candy to all of the trick-or-treaters (she actually shook her box of 'Mike & Ikes' while we handed out the candy). Elle loved seeing all of the kids in their costumes, she was squealing at them in excitement! She even smiled at the kids in the scary masks. Her favorite thing about Halloween had to be the pumpkin that Jonathan carved for her (she has been pointing at it all week).

Carving a "Boo Pumpkin" is a tradition in the Matta family started by Jonathan's dad.

6 month doctor appointment

Ellison had her 6 month doctor appointment this past Tuesday and she was a star! She weighed in at 15lbs 4oz and is 24 3/4 inches long. Our doctor was very pleased with her growth and said that everything from her motor skills to her eating habits were right on. Elle was really showing off for our doctor; she was standing (with our help), wiggling, sitting (on her own), lunging toward things, and talking and squealing up a storm...he couldn't believe all of the energy that she has! He gave us the go ahead to start finger-food and stage 2 in baby food. When it came time for her shots she hardly shed a tear (she cried for a second, her bottom lip went out, but that was the end of that). She even got an Elmo sticker for being such a good girl!

Here are some fun, recent pictures:

I had stepped out of the room for a second, this is the position I found Elle in when I got back.

just being silly

Jonathan's mom said that he used to love to suck on pickles, apparently, so does Ellison!

Natalie and Ellison hanging out

Elle doing her reading homework

Trying out some finger-food (whole wheat toast and bananas)

picking up a piece of toast is harder than it looks...getting it to her mouth was even harder!

bye, have a nice day!

wrist rotations, arching, and peek-a-booing

The wrist rotations are a newer favorite of Ellison's. She will rotate her wrists with or without a toy. (I remember when my cousin David was a baby and he used to rotate his wrists all of the time.) Very funny!

We are not sure if she really likes to stretch or if she really hates sitting in her Bumbo seat, but if the tray was not in place, we think she might be able to get out. She is extremely strong! (this arching thing is a newer trick of Ellison's as well)

We have finally caught her in the act of playing peek-a-boo (whenever she's sees the camera she stops playing because she wants to touch it and put it in her mouth). Ellison has been playing peek-a-boo for the last couple of months. She always initiates it and once Jonathan and I notice what she is up to, we say "peek" to her. Also take note, this is her first day in her big-girl highchair! She is really growing up!

Welcome new friend Ashlyn!

Ellison has been waiting for her new friend "Little Zeal" to arrive, but we didn't know if her new friend would be a boy or a girl. Finally, Ashlyn Kelly Zeal was born on October 5th! We went to meet Ashlyn last week, Elle just loved her little friend and can't wait to see her again.

She's 6 months old!

These are the pictures from Ellison's 6 month photo shoot (the actual prints look much better as these are pictures I took of the prints). She did such a great job smiling even though the photographer lady was talking major baby gibberish to her (example"oosha boosha boo").

Sitting Pretty

Ellison has been working really hard at sitting on her own. She can sit on her own for short periods of time and has made a lot of progress in the last couple of days.
Having fun at Grandma Laurie's & Grandpa Jerry's house.

The tale of Ellison's Baptism

(Story told by Ellison but interpreted and written by my Dad)
I woke up early to review the Bears game plan with my Dad. As we found out later, the coaching staff wasn't on the same page and blew the game with 11 seconds to go. Uncle Tim was very upset.
I wanted to get my exercise in before church, so I decided to hit the weights and do some curls. I don't want to brag or anything, but I've developed some nice definition in my biceps, and with Uncle Tim's protein shakes my strength to weight ratio has doubled!

After the weight room I laced up my soccer boots and hit the field. Mom, Dad, and I knocked the ball around for a good half hour; it really helped to burn off the lactic acid after our 10k on Saturday morning.
Here's a picture of Mom and Dad with me at the start of the service; Dad kept trying to get us to the front of the baptism line because he knew I needed a nap and he, Uncle Timmy, Uncle Erik, and Grandpa wanted to watch the Bears game.
Can you believe that there were 15 other babies being baptized with me?

Here's a picture of my God parents - I actually took this picture.
Here I am being baptized; this was right up there with getting shots!
Again, I was extremely over-tired and in need of a serious nap.
My very proud parents and God-parents.
Here I am with our priest; he was singing a nice song that calmed me down and got me on my way to a hard-earned nap.
Back at home and practicing for trick-or-treating...my Mom just won't stop. She's got an entire candy route developed that she claims will optimize our time and candy intake. She's beyond excited!

Getting in one last hug before my God-parents hit the road.

I just think this is a cute picture of me swimming with the fishies!

Loves books, likes peas, but sleep...not so much!

I wanted to update everyone on our little peanut and what she has been up to lately. As you can see from my title, everything is going great with exception to the night-time sleeping.

Ellison has so much energy, she loves to play, roll, read books, and exercise/dance. She puts most toys in her mouth and when they are not in her mouth she is waiving them around (sometimes hitting herself in the face on accident). She also loves being read to. Most people would think of reading as a quiet, relaxing activity, but not for our little Elle. Reading is a workout; she just loves her books so much that she can't sit still! Rolling across the room is her new thing. She rolls and rolls until something gets in her way. She hates being stopped by walls, plus they hurt, so she gets mad and doesn't always realize she needs to roll the opposite direction, so we move her back to an open space. Ellison has also been found hiding under our curtains and playing w/ them (I'm sure she will be attempting to rip them down soon). Exercise and dancing are another big favorite for Elle. I'll be sitting on the floor playing with her then stand up; she'll look at me, throw her toy to the side and then start pumping her arms and legs as if she is saying "come on Mom, show me some moves." Of course I can't help but give her a couple of my best dance moves (which consist of flailing arms and spins) or some jumping jacks and jabs w/ speed-bag arms with kicks and knees-up (I can only imagine what our neighbors are thinking)! After a minute or two I start to run out of ideas, so then I put on some music and then we just get carried away by the songs (I'm usually laughing at her and myself this whole time - it really can be quite a workout)! Jonathan loves to join in on our dance sessions when he is home from work or on the weekends. When he is here, Elle doesn't know which one of us to watch - I wonder who's dance moves she'll pick up?

Ellison has always been a good eater. From the first time she nursed up until now she has been a champ when it comes to eating (you can tell by the size of thighs, she never misses a meal). I am still nursing her which has been going really well and plan to continue until she is a year old (at least that's my plan for now). We have also been giving her vegetable and fruit mixed with rice and oatmeal cereals. She has loved all of the baby food we have given her: sweet potatoes, peas, squash, carrots, apples, pears...we mash up bananas too. She has her cereal combo around 2x a day and sometimes even asks for second helpings. I'll mix up a pretty big amount and she'll gobble it down, so I'll mix up more and she eats it up, then I tell her "all gone" - she looks at me as if she were just getting started!

Ellison's night-time routine starts around 7pm. We get her out of her clothes for one last naked play session (which she loves), then get her pj's and sleep-sack on. She starts getting cranky around 7:15pm-7:30pm, and that's when I feed her. Half of the time she will fall asleep right after she is done eating, and the other times she will fall asleep in her crib after we sing her a song or two. Now that's the easy part. Things get a little more difficult as the night goes on (it's never easy to try to function when you have to wake up from a deep sleep). Elle will wake up sometime between 10:30pm-12:30am. I try to console her first, but that's when she will usually take it to the next level. Her eyes will be closed as she cries/whines and flails, but as soon as I nurse her she is at ease and will eat then go back to sleep. She will sleep from 1 to 4 hours from there, and we will either get her back to sleep or I will feed her if it has been at least 2 hours since her last feeding. She usually wakes up around 6am and that's when we start our day. Keep in mind, during the day, Elle goes 3-4 hours in between feedings, but at night the time span shortens to 2-3 hours. She has also been known to wake up at 3 or 4am and talk it up for minutes on end, very cute, but not then, not when the sun hasn't come up yet! The funny thing is, we know she could go 4-8 hours between feedings, since it's happened a handful of times; it's just she is not a good sleeper. She prefers to sleep on her tummy. She always rolls herself to her stomach when I lay her in her crib each time she is asleep after a feeding. We analyze it all... we don't know if she has dreams that wake her up, or if she is teething, or going through a growth spurt...we make sure she is warm enough, her diaper is clean, etc. Jonathan and I have been getting up 3-6 times a night with her the last few weeks, and we are really looking forward to a solid night sleep. Every night I go to bed optimistically thinking, this could be the night she sleeps 'through the night', but when I hear her start to make her noises, I look at the clock and simply look forward to getting back in bed and getting another couple hours of sleep until the next wake up call.

In summary, I have not had a solid 8 hours of sleep in almost 6 months, and it's TOTALLY worth it because we have the most beautiful daughter who we are madly in love with, and could have never dreamed of anything more amazing then our little Ellison.
